Abstract
The acute abdominal pain (AAP) is a frequent and challenging complaint that requires a correct diagnosis and treatment, because it could be the first manifestation of a life-threatening condition. We analyse its prevalence and causes. The diagnosis is based on a detailed anamnesis, physical exploration and a correct use of the ancillary studies. It is necessary to describe the pain, that is to say, the types of pain, an accurate characterisation, the onset (sudden, gradual), the provocative and palliating factors, the quality radiation, the time course and the symptoms associated with pain. We discuss the laboratory tests and the radiology tests available, taking account of irrational use for the time and money spent. We conclude with a diagnostically approach to the AAP, and the focus on special or unusual presentations in certain populations, such as women, the elderly and immunocompromised patients. We suggest the initial management of the AAP and we insist in what not to do in these patients.
