Abstract

Writing – either in the mother tongue or in a foreign language – is becoming more and more difficult. This paper tries to outline some activities that aim to use and foster collaborative writing in a foreign language to develop writing. All this focuses on the learning environment of State Language Schools (Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas) – the officially authorised Spanish institutions for the teaching of foreign languages – but it could easily be adapted for any language school. First of all, different teaching methodologies that can be used to achieve the intended learning outcome are analysed. As a result, constructivism is chosen as the best choice to reach the goal. Likewise, it is explained why wikis are considered to be the most suitable tool to achieve the learning outcome as opposed to others like emails, blogs or discussion threads.
