Résumé
Stature is one of the body conformation traits included in the selection index currently applied in the dairy breeding program of Spanish Churra sheep. This study presents a preliminary linkage analysis based on the Illumina Ovine SNP50BeadChip for detection of QTL influencing stature. In humans the genetic architecture of this trait appears to be controlled by a large number of loci, similarly than in cattle, where many QTL affecting different components of bovine stature have been reported. The linkage analysis reported herein identified four QTL significant at the 5% chromosome-wise level on sheep chromosomes 3, 10, 16 and 17. Interestingly, QTL for stature in both dairy and beef cattle breeds have been identified in the bovine orthologous region of the chromosome 3 QTL. Based on a literature review, no obvious functional candidate genes were identified within the confidence intervals of the QTL identified. This study, as a first analysis based on a medium density ovine SNP-chip, provides a first opportunity to compare the genetic architecture of the ovine stature with that described in other species such as humans and cattle.
