Currently, Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) processing is the most widespread additive manufacturing technology in polymer field. However, due to the nature of the manufacturing process, the parts obtained present complex mechanical behaviour, largely because their properties depend on the manufacturing direction (anisotropic behaviour), which limits their application in functional parts and their geometric optimisation. Although mechanical simulation tools based on finite element analysis (FEA) are widely available to predict the in-service behaviour of any component for the most common plastic transformation processes, the material models used by these programmes are not suitable for defining the behaviour of products obtained using FDM processes. In order to overcome this limitation, this study has developed an FEA calculation methodology capable of simulating the mechanical behaviour of polymeric materials processed by FDM in an effective and accurate way. The methodology has been developed from theoretical models of behaviour and validated by performing different mechanical tests on biocomposite parts obtained by FDM 3D printing
