Resum

The northern half of the province of Burgos, a sector historically known as the Burgos Mountains, is part of the Cantabrian Mountains. It is characterized by the alternation between steep mountains and valleys through which the Ebro River and its tributaries flow, although there are also important rivers that belong to the Cantabrian basin and others that are the head of some tributaries of the Douro. An alignment of mountain ranges constitutes the provincial divide of Burgos with Cantabria and Biscay. In its central and highest zone are located the Montes de Valnera, a territory of marked personality that stands out for its biodiversity, its scenic beauty, and the importance of its karstification. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature urged the Governments of Castilla y León and Cantabria to “declare a Joint Protected Area for the entire Cantabrian-Burgos Mountain, which is a guarantor of the optimal conservation of its biodiversity and ethnographic heritage, explicitly recognizing the unitary character, both natural and cultural of the aforementioned space” (UICN, 2005)
