Abstract

The article analyses the recently discovered publication file of the Spanish translation of Samuel Richardson's Clarissa (as Clara Harlowe), carried out by José Marcos Gutiérrez. The richness of the surviving documentation enables one to reconstruct the lengthy process of granting publication permission to the eleven volumes of the translated novel and its consequences for the spacing of the dates of publication. The file also enables one to follow the Spanish government's censorship of this major work of 18th-century European fiction in the context of the period's great increase in translations, and special concern about novels, particularly those originating outside Spain.
