Abstract

The present research points to the mother tongue as fundamental in the learning of other languages, and in the case of Romanian families it represents the link between two generations with more than one language: for the parents their mother tongue is Romanian, unlike the children who consider Spanish, Valencian/Spanish and English language(s) of their own. It is important to emphasize that this fact has not been analyzed so far in the context of Castelló, since it occurs within a multilingual society, in which there are two co-official and school languages; on the contrary, in Romania, the country of origin of the migrant parents, there is only one official language and that is Romanian. The analysis of the data shows that Romanian is the source of learning and acquisition of other languages, both by the families and their children.
