Abstract
The social identity of the players can have benefits for the collective functioning of the team. Therefore, it is important to understand players' perceptions of social identity. Consequently, this study aimed to adapt and validate the Social Identity in Sports Questionnaire into Spanish (CISD-S). 1,075 players, aged between 12-40 years (M = 20.38; SD = 5.26) participated. The multidimensional structure of the CISD-S was validated using confirmatory and exploratory structural equation modelling. In addition, internal consistency was analysed using Cronbach's alpha and the Omega coefficient, discriminant validity through bivariate correlations between the factors of the CISD-S, its nomological validity with the leadership identity variable of athletes and coach, convergent validity by examining the factor loadings and the Average Variance Extracted, and factorial invariance as a function of gender and sport with a sequence of complementary models. A multidimensional structure formed by three first-order factors (intra-group connections, group identification and intra-group affect) was obtained. In addition, the unidimensional structure formed by a single global factor was also tested, but only when the items of the subscales corresponding to the multidimensional structure of the CISD-S were correlated. Both factorial structures showed optimal values of internal consistency (α and ω = .70 - .79). Also, the CISD-S showed an adequate discriminant validity, nomological validity, and it was invariant for gender and types of team sports. These results suggest that the CISD-S appears to be a valid and reliable method to measure social identity with athletes of both genders and team sports. Thus, we believe that this instrument can be very well suited for use by sport professionals.
