Zusammenfassung

During the period of the Union of Spanish and Portuguese Crowns (1580-1640), known as the"lberian Union”or“Philippine Period, "global connections inside and outside the Spanish or "Universal Monarchy” underwent an important impulse. Specifically, Portuguese America and the territories in the South Atlantic experienced important transformations. Brazilian, Spanish, and Portuguese histo- riographical traditions in the past have dealt with this issue in very different ways. Nowadays there is a new historiography that has started to contemplate the ques- tion from a very different point of view, without nationalistic concerns. Questions about defense, administrative reforms, mine discovery, or global connections are emerging as the principal aspects to be considered.
