Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the level of implementation of the principie of sustainable development in the urban heritage included in the urban and territorial legislation of the countries of the American continent. To do this, first of all, we will address the positioning of sustainable urban heritage in international texts, delimiting its concept. Secondly, we will study how heritage elements act in irregular settlements and sustainable or unsustainable urban heritage in formal cities, from which sustainable legal solutions of a different nature should be offered. Finally, we will proceed to carry out a particular study of the greater or lesser impact that urban heritage sustainability has on the urban and territorial regulations of the countries of North America and some countries of Central America, the Caribbean and South America.
