Abstract

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a thermoplastic polymer of interest in numerous different fields, such as the textile industry, food industry, 3D printing and biomedicine. PLA can be easily processed by solution electrospinning to obtain woven non-woven fibers (mat) and by solvent casting for the preparation of different thickness films. The PLA surface coating with poly(dopamine), and subsequent functionalization, is emerging as a good strategy to modulate properties such as biocompatibility, hydrophobicity and antimicrobial activity, thus extending the use of this polymer to other applications such as tissue regeneration, controlled-action drug delivery and wound dressing. Besides, as PLA is a biodegradable polymer in both hydrolytic and industrial composting facilities, its end-of-life would avoid PLA from being polluting as other common plastics do, without neglecting the importance of a good waste management to protect the environment
