Abstract
This article presents the data obtained from an investigation conducted over three years for the Salamanca University Social Council and subsidized by this organisation.Teachers¿ and students¿ opinions about the causes for low performance at university level are presented in a comparative way, so that the different valuation that the former and the latter maintain on the issue can be appreciated.The causes for low performance have been classified in three categories: institutional, teacher-related and student-related.The paper concludes by proposing several courses of action to improve the students¿ performance, which could be taken on board when planning and managing institutions within the context of the European Higher Education Area.
