Propuesta taxonómica para el análisis contrastivo de los gestos emblemáticos

Resumo
This work develops a taxonomy for the inter- and intracultural comparison of emblematic gestures or emblems, signs that pertain to the kinesic non-verbal communication system, that are autonomous from the verbal component, and whose use is not ambiguous within the same speech community (for example, the gesture where the tips of the index and middle fingers brush the thumb with a rapid and repeated movement, meaning ‘money’, is an emblem). This classification consists of 11 categories where the two main elements of the emblems are considered: form and meaning. For the form, the terms equimorphous (gestures with the same form), quasiequimorphous (with a similar or very similar form) and dimorphous (with a different form) are used. For the meaning, the terms synonyms (gestures with the same meaning), dimonyms (with a different meaning) and antonyms (with an opposite meaning) are used. Synonyms with partial use are also included for the comparison of emblems that have the same meaning, but where sociolinguistic differences are found (diaphasic or diastratic), semantic (where one of the emblematic gestures does not include all the possible meanings of the other), or semiotic (where the referent of the emblem changes). This taxonomy is developed based on previous contrastive studies and different illustrative examples are collected for each proposed category. This taxonomy contributes to the creation of a common methodology for the classification and systematization of emblematic gestures in different languages and cultures, thus facilitating the preparation of contrastive gestural inventories. In addition, it can be used in the development of empirical research to study the learning of emblems in second language and foreign language classes, where the gestures of the target language and the mother tongue of the students are compared.
